FIAS at SportAccord in Beijing

Delegation of FIAS - Dr. David Rudman (President), Fernando Compte (General Secretary), Dr. Nikolay Lents (Executive Director) - participated in 41st GAISF General Assembly and committees meetings, and International Sport Conference "SportAccord" held in Beijing (China) from April 22 to April 27, 2007.

GAISF General Assembly elected Hein Verbruggen as President of GAISF for a 4-year term of office. Hein Verbruggen is Vice-President of the UCI (cycling), IOC Member and Chairman of the IOC Coordination Committee for the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008.

The new Council members were also presented at the General Assembly. They were elected/designated for a mandate of 4 years by each group, as per the new statutes of the Association. The new GAISF Council is elected and is composed as follows:
President Hein Verbruggen, Vice-President of UCI (cycling) Members: Denis Oswald, President of ASOIF and of FISA (rowing) Tamas Ajan, President of IWF (weightlifting) Gian Franco Kasper, President of FIS (skiing) Jan Fransoo, President of ARISF and of IKF (korfball) Antonio Espinos Ortueta, President of WKF (karate) Ron Froehlich, President of IWGA (world games) Paul Hoglund, President of JJIF (ju-jitsu)

New International Sports Federations joined the Association - GAISF General Assembly accepted 4 new members within the Association. The ICMG, International Committee of the Mediterranean Games, was accepted as an Associate Member. The IFSC, International Federation of Sport Climbing, the WDF, World Darts Federation and the IDBF, International Dragon Boat Federation, were accepted as Members. The Association counts to date 104 International Sports Federations and Organizations.

During the Conference FIAS held meeting with Hein Verbruggen on international development of Sambo. FIAS active participation in GAISF was discussed.

FIAS representatives conducted talks and business and consultation meetings with members of IOC, Directors of IOC, President of International Paralympic Committee (Sir Philip Craven), ministers of sport, leaders of GAISF, IWGA, ARISF, WADA, presidents of National Olympic Committees and international sport federations on international development of Sambo and cooperation between organizations.

Talks and constructive negotiations were conducted with Minister of Sport of Russia Mr. V.A.Fetisov and President of Olympic Committee of Russia Mr. L.V.Tiagachev. It was decided about the advisability of founding OrgComittee on including Sambo in Olympics.

During the meeting between leaders of FIAS and FILA problems of positions coordination of these federations and possible cooperation between FIAS and FILA were discussed.

During the meeting with WADA representatives (Rune Andersen, Jean-Pierre Moser) development of FIAS anti-doping program and FIAS participation in international pilot anti-doping project were discussed.

Information about Sambo was of a great interest to members of SportAccord forum.

FIAS delegation also participated in SportAccord work meeting on prospective sport movement development.

At the meeting of GAISF Martial Art Committee the problem of organizing and conducting Martial Art Games was discussed, as well as changes and additions to GAISF statute dealing with organization membership.

FIAS delegation took part in working exhibits, while some organizations showing great interest in cooperation with FIAS.

FIAS delegation also conducted meetings with information agencies on popularization of Sambo in the world, as well as with representatives of "Academy of Sport".
